Navigating the Latest GST Changes: What You Must Know Now (August 2025)

As the GST landscape evolves rapidly, staying informed is key to compliance and strategic planning. Here’s a snapshot of the latest updates making waves:

1. GSTR-3B: Locked Post Auto-Population

From the July 2025 tax period (filed in August 2025), taxpayers will no longer be able to edit GSTR-3B after it’s auto-populated. Corrections must be made via GSTR-1A before filing GSTR-3B. Any amendments post-submission are not permitted.

2. Three-Year Filing Deadline Enforced

Effective July 1, 2025, GST returns older than three years past the due date cannot be filed. This applies across all return types (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, etc.). Taxpayers must now act promptly to avoid permanent non-compliance and potential penalties.

3. State-Level Reform: Delhi GST Amendment Bill Passed

Delhi’s Assembly passed the Delhi GST Amendment Bill 2025, aligning state tax laws with national reforms. Key updates include streamlined registration and return filing, extended timelines for input tax credits, establishment of a GST Appellate Tribunal, and an amnesty scheme yielding ₹218 crore in relief collections. Enforcement measures like track-and-trace and clarity on municipal fund treatment were also introduced.

4. Major GST Slab Simplification Recommended

The PMO has given an “in-principle” nod to simplify GST slabs—one proposal includes scrapping the 12% slab altogether, potentially replacing it with broader, consolidated ranges such as 7%, 15%, and 28%. The timeline for implementation is yet to be confirmed.
